Naturally superior wood finishes
Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Application
Preparation
If the surface to be treated is rough, sand smooth with 80-120 grit sandpaper (no sanding is required between coats). If a previous surface coating finish is present e.g. varnish, lacquer, hard wax oil etc. sand back to bare wood, again using 80-120 grit sandpaper. Most previously oiled surfaces can be overcoated, without sanding. Remove any dust, dirt and make sure the surface to be treated is clean and thoroughly dry. Surfaces can be cleaned using Treatex® Refreshment Cleaner. Stir tins and ensure product is at room temperature before use. We strongly recommend a small trial application. When colouring a previously oiled surface a trial application is essential.
Application of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Colours
If you have chosen to only apply Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear please skip to the ‘Application of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear’ section. We advise that when using colours, sufficient product is purchased to complete the project and when more than one tin is required it is advisable to mix them together before use. One coat of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Colour should be brushed or rollered on thinly and evenly. Remove any excess product immediately with a lint free cloth. Allow to dry - maintaining warmth and ventilation will enable the surface to dry within 3-6 hours. Once dry, overcoat with two coats of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear matt, satin or gloss as described in the next section.
Application of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear
If you are treating oily/dense timbers e.g. Iroko, Ipe, Teak, Jarrah, Merbau etc. thin the first coat of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear by mixing with approximately 10% Treatex® Isoparaffin, this enables the product to properly penetrate into these types of timbers. Use a brush or roller to evenly apply Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional allowing roughly 30g per m2. On worktops and doors etc.
pay particular attention to end grain (on end grain apply wet on wet until product is no longer absorbed by the wood). Allow to dry - maintaining warmth and ventilation will enable the surface to dry within 3-6 hours. Apply with a brush or roller a second coat of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional, again allowing roughly 30g per m2. Allow to dry thoroughly overnight before the surface is lightly used. The surface will reach maximum hardness after a further 24 hours.
Treatex® Hardener
Treatex® Hardener is a chemical additive that can be used in commercial locations to increase surface hardness by at least 10%. Can be used in both coats of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear or just top coat if preferred. Mix 10% Treatex® Hardener to Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear. Only mix sufficient product for 1 coat at a time, once mixed with Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional the hardener will start to set, even in the tin with the lid on. Any mixture will remain usable for up to 3 hours. Apply the mixture using the method described in the ‘Application of Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional Clear’ section.
Treatex® Isoparaffin
Use Treatex® Isoparaffin when treating oily/dense timbers e.g. Iroko, Ipe, Teak, Jarrah, Merbau etc. Mix approximately 10% Treatex® Isoparaffin with Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional. Apply Hardwax Oil/Isoparaffin mixture thinly and evenly over the surface with a brush or roller. Allow to dry for 4 hours - the surface may then be treated with undiluted Treatex® Hardwax Oil Traditional.Further Treatex® Hardwax Oil Information
