Natural Hardwax Oil contains a small amount of white pigment which allows it to be used in two different ways:

1. Base coat:

If you prefer to protect light timbers whilst changing the unfinished colour as little as possible then Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural can be applied as a base coat underneath two coats of Treatex Clear Hardwax Oil Ultra to neutralise the warming effect.

2. Top coat:

For a purer white, seal Spruce Colour Tone with two coats of Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural. When Treatex Clear Hardwax Oil is applied on top of our Spruce Colour Tone it can have a slight yellowing effect on the colour.

Please Note!
Hardwax Oil Natural is not a complete finish in its own right and should either be treated with 2 coats of Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear or should applied as 2 coats over Spruce Colour tone.

Coverage

1L will cover approximately 25m² in one coat depending on the timber and method of application.
2.5L will cover approximately 50m² in one coat depending on the timber and method of application.

Preparation

We advise that when using Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural, sufficient product is purchased to complete the project and when more than one tin is required it is advisable to mix them together before use. We strongly recommend a small trial application prior to starting a project.

Method 1 – as a base coat for lighter timbers. Sand the surface to smooth bare wood using 80-120 grit sandpaper. Ensure that any previous finish has been fully removed. Remove dust, dirt and any other contaminates which may lead to uneven absorption of Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural. Make sure the surface to be treated is thoroughly dry. Stir tins and ensure product is at room temperature before use.

Method 2 – as a top coat for surfaces treated with Spruce Colour Tone. If you have applied a coat of Treatex Spruce Colour Tone within the last 24 hours then little preparation is needed. Make sure the previous coat is fully dry before overcoating with Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural. Remove dust, dirt, and any contaminates from the surface. Stir tins and ensure product is at room temperature before use.

Application

Method 1 – as a base coat for lighter timbers. Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural should not be used as a base coat on darker coloured timbers. To change the appearance of light coloured timbers as little as possible, brush/roller on a thin coat of Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural. Leave for 10 minutes and then either slow buff with a soft pad to remove excess followed by finishing with a lint free cloth, alternatively, cloth excess product by hand with a lint free cloth. If excess product is not removed the finish may dry with patchy white marks. Allow to dry – maintaining warmth and ventilation will enable the surface to dry within 3-6 hours. Once dry, seal with two coats of Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear which is available in Flat Matt, Matt, Satin or Gloss sheen levels (see: Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear).

Method 2 – as a top coat for surfaces treated with Spruce Colour Tone. For a brighter white seal our Spruce Colour Tone by using a brush or roller to evenly apply Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural - maintaining warmth and ventilation will enable the surface to dry within 3-6 hours. Apply with a brush or roller a second coat of Natural Hardwax Oil. Allow to dry thoroughly overnight before the surface is lightly used. Usually ready to walk on after 8 hours and ready to replace furniture etc. after 18 hours.

Tips

Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural is not a finish in its own right and should not be used on its own. If Natural Hardwax Oil is applied too thickly drying time will be increased. To speed up drying time raise the room temperature and increase air flow by opening doors, windows and using a fan. The Treatex Ultra formula relies on airflow to aid drying. Treatex rollers and brushes are available. Alternatively, use a short microfibre roller or good quality brush. Wet brushes and rollers can be cleaned using white spirit.
