Wood is a beautiful material and can be used both inside and outside of your home. If you’re not sure what products you can use on wood, this guide is here to help. Keep reading to learn more.

Ammonia

You should never put ammonia on wood, it is a chemical that is in a lot of cleaning products and is good for many situations, however, it should not be used on wood. Unfortunately, the chemical makeup of ammonia will cause damage to the finished surface of wood furniture, flooring and cabinets and end up dissolving the wood over time.

Oil

You are able to use a tiny amount of oil on wood products to help keep their shine, however, too much can make your wood slippery, which can be dangerous. This is mostly relevant for wooden flooring as once oil has been applied, it is no longer safe to walk on.

Glass Cleaners

Glass cleaners are not designed for wood. While they may be great for removing streaks in your windows if you apply them to wood products, some ingredients can strip the wood, paint or wood finish products such as wood wax and polish.

Wet Mops

You can end up ruining hardwood floors by using wet mops. This is because wood is a porous material which absorbs water over time. You may not see a difference at first but constantly putting water on your wood can lead to damage. You can use mops as long as they are not sopping wet and all water has been squeezed out. This also goes for steam cleaners which can push water into the wood. Instead, opt for a microfibre mop or cloth that will help protect the wood in your home from water damage.
