FAQ

How often do I need to apply a wood protector?

Fortunately, thanks to the highly durable properties of Treatex wood protector products, they do not need to be reapplied very often. We recommend that a wood protector is applied once every 12 months to fully safeguard timber against wear and tear or, if outside, any weathering.

Can treated timber be painted?

While you can paint on treated timber, both the Treatex Classic Colour Collection and Treatex Eco Colours work best on unfinished timber, so we recommend removing any previous finishes and ensure that the surface is dry and free of contaminants. To remove a previous finish, you can use our Preparation Cleaner.

How is best to apply Treatex Hardwax Oil?

For best results, there are two methods you can use to apply Treatex Hardwax Oil.

  • Application Method 1 - when buffing the first coat with a machine

  • Sand 120-150 grit - Hardwax Oil should always be applied to bare timber or over a previous coat of Hardwax Oil

  • Apply a thin coat of ULTRA using a good quality roller

  • Leave for 10 minutes

  • Slow buff with a soft pad to remove excess

  • Finish using a lint-free cloth under the buffer

  • Leave for 45 minutes to dry with good ventilation

  • Apply the final coat with a high-quality microfibre roller - do not buff this coat as there won’t be enough product left on the timber to protect properly

  • Usually ready for use after 8 hours

  • Usually ready for furniture after 18 hours

Application Method 2 - when applying with a brush or roller

  • Sand 100-150 grit - Hardwax Oil should always be applied to bare timber or over a previous coat of Hardwax Oil

  • Apply the first coat using a good quality brush or roller - do not apply thickly - this will result in extended drying times

  • First coat will usually be dry within 3-6 hours with good ventilation and airflow

  • Apply the second coat using a good quality brush or roller

  • Usually ready for use after 8 hours

  • Usually ready for furniture after 18 hours

How do you apply Treatex Exterior Oils?

We recommend that Treatex Exterior Oils are applied as follows:

  1. Make sure the tin/tins are stirred thoroughly before and during use.

  2. Use a brush or roller to evenly apply the Treatex Exterior Oils, moving in the same direction as the wood grain. If possible apply the first coat to all sides of the wood before installation, paying particular attention to any end grain. Apply liberally on the end grain to fully seal.

  3. After 12 hours of drying, a second coat can be applied. After this coat, leave for approximately 12-24 hours to dry. Don’t apply too thickly.

  4. For decking, we recommend applying Treatex Anti-Slip decking oil.
