When and How Often to Treat Exterior Timber Products

Outdoor timber is a beautiful addition to many gardens. Whether you have a timber shed, decking or swing set, you need to use the right wood protector and timber finish to ensure the longevity and durability of the product. There are many wood enhancement products on the market, so once you have chosen the right one, it’s time to finish your timber.

If you are unsure when or how often to treat your exterior timber, here is our guide to help.

When did you last treat the wood?

You’ll need to treat the wood as soon as you get it in order to protect it from the weather and insects. After this, you may need to treat your exterior wood as often as every 6 months, but this depends on your geographical location and the type of wood you are treating. Usually, it’s a good idea to treat your wood every 12-18 months.

Every year is a good rule of thumb. This is the best way to keep your furniture and fixtures safe from the elements and looking great. If you have yet to treat your wood, get started now. The sooner you use a wood protector and timber finish, the sooner your wood is protected.

The type of wood you are treating

How often you treat your wood is dependent on the type. A popular hardwood is called Teak, furniture made from teak is more expensive than other options, but this usually means it will last longer than softer wood types. Teak is also more dense and oily, so doesn’t necessarily need wood enhancement products to protect it from rot. Although a high-quality Teak Protector is a good idea to keep it looking good.

Other softwoods such as pine, are much more vulnerable to rot, particularly at the ends of the wood where the grain surface faces outwards towards the open air. You should treat your softwood at least every year but a few coats of oil twice a year is a better option. The oil will also help you add more colour and improve the sheen.
